A new innovative cooling law for simulated annealing algorithms

2015

The present paper proposes an original and innovative cooling law in the field of Simulated Annealing (SA) algorithms. Particularly, such a law is based on the evolution of different initial seeds on which the algorithm works in parallel. The efficiency control of the new proposal, executed on problems of different kind, shows that the convergence quickness by using such a new cooling law is considerably greater than that obtained by traditional laws. Furthermore, it is shown that the effectiveness of the SA algorithm arising from the proposed cooling law is independent of the problem type. This last feature reduces the number of parameters to be initially fixed, so simplifying the prelimin…

EABOT – Energetic analysis as a basis for robust optimization of trigeneration systems by linear programming

2008

Abstract The optimization of synthesis, design and operation in trigeneration systems for building applications is a quite complex task, due to the high number of decision variables, the presence of irregular heat, cooling and electric load profiles and the variable electricity price. Consequently, computer-aided techniques are usually adopted to achieve the optimal solution, based either on iterative techniques, linear or non-linear programming or evolutionary search. Large efforts have been made in improving algorithm efficiency, which have resulted in an increasingly rapid convergence to the optimal solution and in reduced calculation time; robust algorithm have also been formulated, ass…

Justification technique generalizations

2006

The justification technique was introduced various decades ago for the resource-constrained project scheduling problem, although it has rarely been used with the problem. Justification is a simple and quick technique which when applied to schedules produces a new schedule that is, at most, as long as the original schedule — and often shorter. A recent article (Valls et al, 2005), showed that incorporating justification in heuristic algorithms can produce a substancial improvement in the results obtained. These results have motivated us to generalise this technique in order to study it in greater depth. This paper proposes distinct forms and generalisations for the justification technique an…

Reducing complexity in H.264/AVC motion estimation by using a GPU

2011

H.264/AVC applies a complex mode decision technique that has high computational complexity in order to reduce the temporal redundancies of video sequences. Several algorithms have been proposed in the literature in recent years with the aim of accelerating this part of the encoding process. Recently, with the emergence of many-core processors or accelerators, a new approach can be adopted for reducing the complexity of the H.264/AVC encoding algorithm. This paper focuses on reducing the inter prediction complexity adopted in H.264/AVC and proposes a GPU-based implementation using CUDA. Experimental results show that the proposed approach reduces the complexity by as much as 99% (100x of spe…
